Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer

Left uncontrolled, high blood sugar can lead to complications like blindness. In every single category, the VHA outperforms even the best-ranked hospitals in America. According to a RAND Corporation study, the VHA system delivers two thirds of the care recommended by medical professional societies, which might not sound all that great until you remember that another RAND study found that outside of the VHA system, providers manage to deliver, on average, only about £0 percent of recommended care. Veterans themselves sing their health system's praises.

Some two hundred cases of blindness in a group of Cambodian women forced by the Khmer Rouge to witness the torture and slaughter of those close to them, particularly their menfolk. Examination of these women confirmed that there was nothing physically wrong with their eyes. Their own understanding of what had happened to them was that, having been made to bear witness to the unbearable, they had all "cried until they could not see";16 4. The case of Mr.

Several groups have promoted the use of gardens in developing nations and the Vitamin Angel Alliance gives at risk children high potency vitamin A tablets, strong enough so that only two are required per year to prevent blindness. At a cost of only $.05 per tablet, only $25,000 is needed to prevent 500,000 children from going blind per year.37 Contrast this with golden rice, which has cost more than $100 million dollars so far and is not yet ready.

Did you know that diabetes is the leading cause of amputations and one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly?2 Diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions. With more than 90 percent of these cases known as type-2 diabetes (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes), we must seriously consider what is going wrong! Type-1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes. This type of diabetes usually occurs in children and is the result of an autoimmune attack on the pancreas. This leaves these children without any insulin; therefore, they must take insulin to survive.
Damage to the Photoreceptors Photoreceptor Inner Segments Photoreceptor Outer Segments Pigment Epithelium Chonocapillaries The development of drusens separates the photoreceptors of the eye from its blood supply and causes an area of blindness. The Generation of Free Radicals in the Retina As I stated, when the retinal pigment and photoreceptors absorb light, the process forms free radicals. High-energy ultraviolet light and visible blue light are especially capable of producing enemy free radicals in the retina of the eye.
Other studies have revealed that oxidative stress was more significant in those with secondary complications of diabetes, such as retinopathy (damage caused by diabetes to the blood vessels in the back of the eye that can lead to blindness) or cardiovascular disease. The researchers conducting these studies concluded that antioxidant supplements should be added to the traditional diabetic treatments as a way to help reduce these complications.12 Several studies have shown that all antioxidants may improve insulin resistance.

OVERDOSAGE The first symptoms of poisoning are sneezing, lacrimation, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, burning sensation in the mouth and pharyngeal space, and inability to swallow; then, following resorption: paresthesia, vertigo, possible blindness, paralysis of the limbs, also mild convulsions, lowering of cardiac frequency, cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension. Death occurs either through systolic cardiac arrest or through asphyxiation. The alkaloids can also be absorbed through the uninjured skin.
OVERDOSAGE In cases of overdosage (over 3 g quinine) or of long-term administration of the drag or its alkaloids, nausea, summer cholera, headache, fall of body temperature, intravascular hemolysis, cardiac arrhythmias, buzzing in the ears, hearing and visual disorders (all the way to complete deafness and blindness) may occur. Death comes with dosages of 10 to 15 g of quinine through heart failure and asphyxiation. Following gastric lavage, the symptomatic therapy for acute poisonings includes atropine for bradycardia and phenytoin in the presence of tachycardie heart rhythm disorders.
OVERDOSAGE Overdosages in susceptible patients can lead to liver, cardiac and kidney damage as well as central nervous system disorders such as spasms, more rarely also to psychoses and to permanent injuries such as paralysis and visual disorders, even blindness. Cases of death, particularly among children, have been observed following administration of Filmaron oil (10% solution of volatile extracts of the rhizomic drag in cooking oil). DOSAGE Mode of Administration: Warning: Dosages may be toxic!
Total blindness (amaurosis) can occur within a few hours or a few days, that then disappears again after the passage of several weeks. Following gastrointestinal emptying (inducement of vomiting, gastric lavage with burgundy-colored potassium permanganate solution, sodium sulfate), instillation of activated charcoal and shock prophylaxis (quiet, warmth), the therapy for poisonings consists of treating spasms with diazepam (i.v.), electrolyte substitution and treating possible cases of acidosis with sodium bicarbonate infusions. In case of shock, plasma volume expanders should be administered.
Use over extended periods of time is said to possibly lead to weak vision and total blindness. DOSAGE Daily Dosage: 500 mg. Storage: Protect from light and keep dry. LITERATURE Barbetti P et al., Quassinoids from Quassia amara. In: PH 32:1007. 1993. Bray DH et al, (1987) Phytother Res 1 (1):22. Geissmann T, (1964) Ann Rev Pharmacol 4:305. Kupchan SM, Streelman DR, (1976) J Org Chem 41:3481. Murae T et al, (1973) Tetrahedron 29:1515. Murae T et al., (1975) Chem Pharm Bull 23 (9):2191. Njar VCO et al., 2-Methoxycanthin-6-on: a new alkaloid from the stem wood of Quassia amara.
Then, following resorption, paresthesia, vertigo, possible blindness, paralysis of the limbs, mild convulsions, lowering of cardiac frequency, cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension occur. Death occurs either through systolic cardiac arrest or through asphyxiation. The lethal dosage is between 10 and 20 mg of the alkaloid mixture, corresponding to 1 to 2 gm of the dmg. The alkaloids can be absorbed through the uninjured skin.

High oxygen levels in incubators produces blindness in babies. [Nutrition Reviews 52: 253-65, 1994] The faddish "oxygen bars"where people would come into a bar to inhale oxygen through a nasal tube, improved oxygenation of tissues but also could have been problematic. That is why antioxidants (anti-rusting agents) found in plant foods and dietary supplements are widely promoted to counter aging, improve immunity from disease and to promote health.

It is now known to be a fact (again) that diabetics suffering from either type have an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, blindness and Alzheimer's disease, etc. Elevated levels of insulin can cause inflammation in the brain that may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This finding was reported in the Archive Of Neurology (Volume 62, page 1539). More evidence has been uncovered that Alzheimer's disease may actually be a third form of diabetes, according to researchers from Northwestern University (Chicaco).

Even one dose can cause blindness. And, it harms healthy cells as well as cancer cells. On the other hand, intravenous vitamin C selectively kills cancer cells without toxicity. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Iowa City, Iowa, found that intravenous Adriamycin exerts its cancer-killing effect by increasing hydrogen peroxide (H202) inside tumor cells. Hydrogen peroxide levels rise by 4-fold in prostate cancer cells when Adriamycin is employed.

A US TV commercial for biotechnology claimed that golden rice can "help prevent blindness and infection in millions of children" suffering from vitamin-A deficiency. Time magazine featured the rice on its cover, stating, "This rice could save a million kids a year." Syngenta even claimed that one month of a delay in marketing Golden Rice would cause 50,000 children to go blind.30 A closer look reveals some interesting omissions in the industry's numbers. According to a Greenpeace report, golden rice provides so little vitamin A, "a two-year-old child would need to eat 7 pounds per day.

Even the highly praised "miracle" drug insulin, which is injected into diabetics, has now been proven to cause diabetic blindness. Another drug, the anti-malaria medication plaquenil, which is supposed to be useful against lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin problems, is often prescribed. Even when diabetes is tightly managed, its long-term complications include blindness, heart disease, stroke, and vascular disease that often leads to gangrene and amputation. There are two major types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2, commonly called juvenile diabetes and adult-onset diabetes, respectively, because of the age at which each type is usually diagnosed. (Increasingly, adult-onset diabetes is becoming a misnomer: skyrocketing rates of childhood obesity are leading to increasing numbers of children who have Type 2 diabetes.

Wood alcohol can cause blindness and formaldehyde can cause cancer. In some cases aspartame may suppress appetite and "kill" AGNI, the digestive fire, altogether. Both can lead to quick, excessive weight gain. According to Consumer Reports, aspartame has a shelf life of between two and three months. After that it begins to break down and pose an increasing danger to the consumer. The same occurs when aspartame or an aspartame-containing food is heated. Aspartame accounts for more than 75 percent of the total adverse reactions to food reported to the U.S. Federal Drug Administration.

GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSIS Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness in the world today, and the likelihood of developing it increases with age. It is an umbrella term for a range of conditions affecting the eye, where the pressure inside the eye becomes too high and the optic nerve at the back of the eye becomes damaged, which can lead to the loss of vision if left untreated. There are two main types of glaucoma.

Inadequate intake of vitamin A, which is characterized by night blindness (i.e., difficulty seeing in the dark or adjusting to bright lights), is also associated with serious eye diseases. Take 25,000 IU of vitamin A (not beta-carotene) daily for thirty days, then reduce the dosage to 10,000 IU daily. If, however, you are a woman of childbearing age and there is any chance that you might get pregnant, do not take more than 5,000 IU daily. To reduce your long-term risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts, take 5 mg daily of lutein, either as lutein esters or unbound (free) lutein.
